According to John Dewey, "Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself". Education brings the children and youth into the realities of life and allow them to use their learnings to face the big world.

But how can they learn if their environment is not conducive for learning the essential things for life? Thus, it is the commitment and responsibility of the government's education department to ensure that the schools and learning facilities are well provided for the students.

This is where people should work hand in hand for the future of our young generation.

As part of the annual commitment of Team Acosta on Brigada Eskwela, the team identified schools that need the assistance the most and looked for partners and sponsors to help augment the costs and lack of manpower. 

On it's third day, Team Acosta was with the ever supportive ☨Villarica, Coronel, Pojas, Caharian Law Office (VCPC) in painting the walls, stairs and cleaning the school vicinity of  Zonta Elementary School.

Brigada Eskwela is here once again! 

Another school year is about to begin and students, teachers as well as parents are gearing up for another year of learning experience.

As part of the back to school routine, schools are now conducting the annual "Brigada Eskwela". This year, the theme is "Tayo Para sa Paaralang Ligtas, Maayos at Handa- Mula Kindergarten Hanggang Senior High School".

Every year, it has been a commitment of Team Acosta to take part of the Brigada Eskwela. The team jumped off at J.P Laurel Elementary School painting walls, cleaning the surroundings and feeding Moringa Tuna Lugaw. Team Acosta with school principal Leoncio Fernandez and teachers hand in hand prepared the school facilities for the incoming students.

Brigada Eskwela 2016 will run from May 30-June 4, 2016. And Team Acosta greatly welcomes donations and man power from everyone who wants to make a difference for the education of our young ones.

Goodjao Community visitation

Afternoon visit at Brgy 76-A Bucana, Adult literacy "Goodjao" Community headed by Purok leader Carleole Arquillano and Pastor Bobby Amsaludin together with Councilor Mabel Sunga Acosta, Dr. Maria Ines, Asuncion CESO VI, LSB Schools Division Supt., Engr. Armando Morales, Science Dept. Supervisor, Ms. Janeth Esteban, ALS Head, and Ms. Fe Pasamonte, Senior High Coordinator.

This ocular inspection was conducted by the Department of Education-Division in partnership with the Office of Councilor Mabel Sunga Acosta for a possible implementation of an Adult Literacy Program for the benefit of the Badjao community under the Alternative Learning System (ALS) of DepEd.

Travelling Science Centrum (Health Science on the Go)

Can you imagine our world today without Science? That would be easy. You wouldn't be facing your computer right now. You wouldn't be holding your smartphones or asking google which direction you would go or what good restaurant is a good place to go to. You wouldn't be having any social media accounts or send messages in a snap. In short, we would be found inside a cave living a primitive life without the technologies we are having right now. 

Life wouldn't be as easy as it is.

Knowing the importance of Science in human life, the Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology and Science Centrum in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Education launched the Mindanao leg of "Health Science on the Go". This UNILAB sponsored initiative aims to deliver the innovative Science equipments to the young Filipino minds.  The travelling Science Centrum goes around the country to allow young and old Filipinos discover more of what Science can offer and do. The equipments are displayed inside the Mindanao Science and Technology Centrum at Bago Oshiro, Tugbok, Davao City. This will be a month-long exhibit where everyone can visit for free.

The Opening Ceremony of the Health Science on the Go was held last September 23, 2015. The activity was duly attended by Dr. Anthony C. Sales, CESO III, Regional Director if DOST XI, Engr. Filemon T. Berba, Jr., President of PFST, Engr. Alberto Ungab, Rep. of Cong. Isidro Ungab, Coun. Leo Avilla, Rep. of Mayor Rody Duterte, Ms. Donna Escosora, Rep. of Coun. Mabel Sunga Acosta, Ms. Rhodora Palomar-Fresnedi, Executive Director of UNILAB Foundation. Also, students from Mintal Elementary School were there to see the display of the Travelling Science Centrum. The students grabbed the rare opportunity to personally experience how cool the materials are.

Speaking in front of the audience, Dr. Sales, CESO III said that the Science on the Go project is a modality of DOST to bring Science to the masses. This is supported by the message of Engr. Alberto Ungab as he encourage everyone to value and appreciate Science. He said that the Travelling Science Centrum is an interactive Science modules available to everyone. He added, with a very strong will that "we have to build Science a gateway to the public rather than just making some terms sound fancy. He encouraged everyone most especially the educators and government officials to create new scientists. In order to fullfil this, according to him we have to start with the elementary and high school grades. "We have to bring science into the consciousness of the students."

After all the speeches and talks, the Travelling Science Centrum- Health Science on the Go was formally opened through a ribbon cutting. Right then, all the visitors toured the area and tried the cool equipments and discovered more about Health Science.

Happy Healthy Teachers Day! :D

In commemoration of the 125^th birthday of Pres. Elpidio Quirino, a series of wellness events for teachers were organized by the President Elpidio Quirino Foundation. This is to give credit to Pres. Quirino who started his public service career as a barrio teacher.

Led by wellness guru, Ms. Cory Quirino, the activities were conducted nationwide, in partnership with SM Malls. In Davao City, it was held at the Annex Event Center of SM Ecoland last August 31, 2015.

More than one hundred teachers from different schools in Davao City attended the said activity, which started with an exhibit of health products and services of some agencies and companies. The five-hour event covered various health and fitness topics, to wit: Exercise, Nutritional Counseling, Health Management, Disease Prevention, Pain Management, Skin care and weight loss tips, Laughter  Yoga and Make-overs.

The top five winners of Miss World Philippines 2015 Mindanao, which will represent the island to the Miss World Philippines next month, also graced the event.

To top up the fun, the event featured games, trivia contest about President Quirino and surprises for all attendees. The Office of Councilor Acosta also sponsored 12 mugs for the raffle.

That President Elpidion Quirino is an Ilocano? He was born in the small and well preserved city of Vigan, Ilocos Sur. (Additional trivia: Vigan was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. It is the best-preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia showing the fusion of old Asian and Spanish architecture. If you want to see the authentic scene of this beautiful site, you may walk or ride a kalesa along Calle Crisologo.)

Pres. Quirino rose into Presidential power when Pres. Manuel Quezon unexpectedly died in April 1948. He was then the Vice President during that time. 

Pres. Quirino retired from presidency and then died of a heart attack in February 29, 1956.

2nd K to 12 Anniversary Celebration

It has been two years since the enactment of the RA No. 10533 also known as the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 signed on May 15, 2013. In its 2nd year anniversary, divisions from Region 11 gathered to celebrate this huge milestone for a better Philippine education. Teachers, people in the academe, members of the LGU and the Department of Education as well as private stakeholders converged in USEP Gymnasium, Obrero Campus bringing the banner of their own division. The gymnasium was filled with about 10,000 attendees participating the event. 

The celebration kicked off with the loud cheers and yells of the teachers and DepEd officials from Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley, Island Garden City of Samal and of course the host city, Davao City. Each division showed their energy and creativity as they shout their loudest cheer and chant with matching dance moves and props.

As the Chairman of the Committee on Education and in behalf of the City Mayor of Davao, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, Coun. Mabel Sunga Acosta extended the mayor's warmest greetings to the whole crowd. 

The programme was also filled with dance presentations and fun games with exciting prizes given away.

On its fifth year of implementation, the Department of Education is very positive that they will be able to carry out the last mile of this system, which is the Senior High School. For this year 2015, the department and the schools are getting ready for the implementation of Senior High School (SHS) in Academic Year 2016-2017. As we join the bandwagon of a 12 year education system, the Department of Education also made sure that the K to 12 curriculum is standards- and competence-based. And is inclusive and built around the needs of the learners and the community.  

In preparation for a full swing K to 12 system, the Department of Education has continuously increased its budget in order to hire more teachers and to fill necessary gaps in schools. To aid the transition process, DepEd aims to hire graduates of Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering and other specialists in subjects with a shortage of qualified Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) applicants, graduates of Technical-Vocational courses, Higher Education Institution faculty and practitioners be allowed. 

For those who are not working in the academe, you also have a role in paving the way for a better Philippine basic education system. 

• Be informed. Education shapes our future as Filipinos, it is our duty to be aware of reforms in basic education that will move our country forward.
• Spread awareness. Tell your family, friends, and networks about the K to12 Program and help them stay informed.

• 1 year of Kindergarten
• 6 years of primary education
• 4 years of Junior High School
• 2 years of Senior High School

In Asia, the Philippines is the last country with a 10-year pre-university cycle. And one of only three countries worldwide together with Angola and Djibouti. K to 12 is a strategic move for Philippine basic education as it is the recognized standards for students and professionals globally.
