But how can they learn if their environment is not conducive for learning the essential things for life? Thus, it is the commitment and responsibility of the government's education department to ensure that the schools and learning facilities are well provided for the students.

This is where people should work hand in hand for the future of our young generation.

As part of the annual commitment of Team Acosta on Brigada Eskwela, the team identified schools that need the assistance the most and looked for partners and sponsors to help augment the costs and lack of manpower. 

On it's third day, Team Acosta was with the ever supportive ☨Villarica, Coronel, Pojas, Caharian Law Office (VCPC) in painting the walls, stairs and cleaning the school vicinity of  Zonta Elementary School.

In her years of service as 1st District Councilor of Davao City, Councilor Mabel Sunga Acosta proved to be doing her duty for the people.
In 2009, Councilor Acosta was awarded as one of the Ten Outstanding Councilors of the Philippines (TOCP) and used the funds she received (worth 1M) to implement an infrastructure building for the City Government of Davao. It was a Multipurpose Building at New Matina Elementary School, New Matina Gravahan, Davao City.

This building was dedicated to the late SOLEDAD "Nanay Soleng" DUTERTE, mother of Mayor Rody Duterte, an educator, civic leader, social activitist, women and children's advocate. The Turn-over ceremony was represented by Maam Eleonor Duterte, Mayor Rody's older sister.

Another milestone for AMA College has unfolded. Their mission of providing continuous quality IT-based education paved the way for the establishment of this new building with new classrooms ready to be utilized by the learners. AMA Education System considers that a conducive learning environment is vital for the students as they gear towards excellence.

Hence, to formalize the opening and thanksgiving of this new blessing not just for the school but also for the students of this city, the AMA management held a Ground Breaking Ceremony in Malvar Campus last February 26, 2016.

39th SSEAYP Ambassadors of Goodwill

The 39th Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Program (SSEAYP) Philippine Ambassadors of Goodwill or its batch name called “Bugkos Lahi”, headed by National Leader Mabel Acosta and in partnership with 39th SSEAYP Singapore Contingent headed by Ms. Joy Lim conducted its third Project Hope Philippines in Quezon City on February 27-28, 2015.  This year’s beneficiaries are students from West Fairview Elementary School in Quezon City.

Turn-over of sound system and educational materials to West Fairview Elementary School

On the first day of activity, the batch turn-over a complete set of sound system and educational materials like books to the West Fairview Elementary School and a story-telling session with the Grade 3 pupils was also conducted.  An alumni dinner was also held at Island Seafood, Techno hub, Quezon City.

On the second day, the contingent conducted programs such as Basic Theater, Leadership Training and Disaster Risk Reduction Management to the pupils and officers of the school paper and pupil government organizations of West Fairview Elementary school.

Josefa Llanes Escoda Elementary School

Josefa Llanes Escoda Elementary School located at F. Rodriguez St., Gem Village, Maa, Davao City has been experiencing flood problems causing distraction of classes especially during the rainy season.

Upon the ocular inspection of the area, the City Engineer’s Office recommended to elevate the grounds with 150 truckloads of landfill.

As the chairperson of the Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Arts and Culture, Maria Belen S. Acosta together with the school principal, Cecilia Cardoza distributed letters last November 13, 2013 requesting for any donations that may be used for the Ground Elevation Joint Community Project.

As of July 31, 2014, 75% of the area is already covered with landfill.

SCHOOL OPENING FOR SY 2009-10

School Year 2009-2010 officially opened in public schools nationwide yesterday, the first of June.

Councilor Acosta, as chair of the Committe on Education and a member of the Local School Board, on June 1 visited two (2) schools around the city and assessed for herself the conditions of these schools in catering the educational needs of the local youth.

Pagdiriwang ng Buwan ng Wika

Ateneo de Davao High School Department celebrates BUWAN NG WIKA on August 19, 2008 at the school's Sports Complex, with its theme: "Wika Mo, Wikang Filipino, Wika ng Mundo, Mahalaga". Councilor Mabel Acosta as guest of honor and speaker shares the importance of communication with the use of our own Wikang Filipino, despite the rise of the ever developing communication technology, which greatly affects our medium of communication.

COUNCILOR MABEL ACOSTA SUPPORTS ADDU STUDENT CONCOM

Councilor Mabel Sunga Acosta was invited to give an inspirational message to the student-members of the Constitutional Commission of SAMAHAN, the ADDU student council. The meeting was held last Friday, 6:00pm at F408 (Finster building) of the Ateneo de Davao University, Jacinto campus. The Commission, chaired by Ms. Liezel F. Salera, met for the proposed amendment of the SAMAHAN’s constitution. It was formally opened by James Chew, SAMAHAN president. Also present was Atty. John Mahamud who shared his inputs as well, being a past active member of the same student body apart from his other involvements when he was in the undergrad.

As Chairperson of the Committee on Education, Councilor Acosta is delighted that students are becoming more politically aware and involved. For this endeavor, she gives her all-out support to the SAMAHAN. This is also to encourage every student in each school to take active participation in school activities, whether they may be co- or extra-curricular.

SCHOOL VISITS IN PAQUIBATO DISTRICT

Unpaved and rough roads. River crossing. Hours and hours of hiking over rocky mountains and muddy passages. These are what Team Mabel had to go through when they conducted school visitations in Paquibato District last March 12-13, 2007.

Notwithstanding the occasional rains during the two-day activity, Councilor Acosta, ten (10) of her staff and three (3) personnel from the Local School Board Unit of the Department Education paid visit to six (6) schools located in Barangays Colosas and Tapak.

On March 12, the group visited Surayan Elem. School, Panaga High School, Datu Libayao Elem. School, and Butay Elem. School, where they spent the night sleeping on the classrooms and in tents set up on the school grounds. The following day, the group spent a total of nine (9) hours backpacking in order to reach Labo Elem. School and Mangani Primary School, and in getting back to Sitio Butay where their vehicles are parked.

The school visits resulted to the following observations:

» All the school sites were taken from ancestral domain properties of the donees who are residents of the barangays.

» Majority of the schools have old, wooden and dilapidated classroom buildings and some of them needs additional classrooms to accommodate the ever increasing student enrollment.

» Nearly all the schools lack furniture and most of the students are using armchairs which are about to fall apart.

» Delivery of armchairs by suppliers to these distant schools is least prioritized because of the remoteness of the areas.

» There has been want of textbooks and workbooks for the students to use.

» A few of the teachers frequently absent themselves from school to go to downtown for seminars or to attend to personal errands, which leave the students, who had walked kilometers to reach the school, frustrated and dejected.

» A number of teachers appointed in these far-flung schools are not receiving the hardship post allowance due them.

On a light note, all the schools received school supplies, medals, sports equipment and medicines from the Office of Councilor Acosta.
