How to Join the Search for Campus Journalist of the Year Award.

Requirements for Joining the Councilor Mabel Sunga Acosta’s
Search for Campus Journalist of the Year 2008:

1. Nominee must be a bonafide 3^rd and 4^th year students from any distinguished public high school in Davao City;
2. The Nominee must not be a previous winner of the Councilor Mabel Sunga Acosta Campus Journalist of the Year;
3. The student must submit the following NOT later than 5:00pm, Monday, March 10, 2008:

§ Fully Accomplished Nomination Form

§ Endorsement Letter from the school Principal and School Paper Advisor

§ Copies of articles made

§ Photocopies of Certificates and Awards Received

Judging

Qualified nominees will undergo on the spot news writing and photo appreciation activity and panel interview with top caliber journalists from print and broadcast media outfits on March 12, 2008 from 8:00 in the morning till 12:00 noon.

CRITERIA FOR JUDGING

Content of submitted articles 10%

a.)              Analysis: thoughtful and logical reflection on the subject matter.

b.)              Benefit to society: the story's public impact, relevance, or service.

c.)              Context: thoroughness in exploring the story's background, and the "how" and "why" questions behind the news.

d.)              Integrity: fairness and independence from the story's sources.

e.)              Originality or uniqueness of the subject matter.

f.)         Reporting: depth, rigour and volume of research and investigation.

g.)              Technique: innovative and engaging method of presenting the information.

h.)              Transparency of method: the extent to which the audience will understand where the information comes from.

i.)         Writing quality: engagement and emotional impact, vivid presentation, compelling/captured attention, structure/architecture, creativity, style or flair, voice, and narrative technique.)

On the spot written article 40%

a.) Quality of Content - articles should be well-written showing a high degree of writing skill and flair.

b.) Correct paragraph construction-paragraphs must posses coherence and unity, correct spelling using correct grammatical forms, including verb tenses and must use Gender-inclusive language;

c.) Novelty of ideas –articles must posses innovativeness, uniqueness and originality.

Interview 50%

Judges evaluate each nominee based on the total presentation. The following criteria are of equal importance in evaluating the nominee: Analysis & Content, Organization & Delivery

Awards

Four winners will be chosen from the qualified nominees: The Grand Prize Winner, 1^st Runner-up, 2^nd Runner-up and 3^rd Runner-up.

All four winners will each receive a Medallion of Excellence which will be awarded on their graduation/recognition day. The school represented by the winners and their school paper advisors will likewise receive a Certificate of Recognition. Winners will also be featured in Councilor Mabel Sunga Acosta’s program with ABS-CBN on March 16, 2008.

General Information

§ Qualified nominees will be notified on March 10, 2008 and will undergo on the spot news writing and photo appreciation activity and panel interview with top caliber journalists from print and broadcast media outfits on March 12, 2008.

§ The Office of Councilor Mabel Sunga Acosta will only accept entries submitted from a Public High School in Davao City.

§ The schools must not nominate students who will be compelled to attend other events on the interview day, Monday, March 12, 2008 at 8:00 in the morning until 12:00noon.

§ Previous winners of the Councilor Mabel Sunga Acosta’s Search for Campus Journalist of the Year are no longer qualified to join the competition.

§ Entry forms will not be returned. Nominees should make a copy of the completed form for future use.

§ The student’s name must be entered on the entry form exactly as he or she wishes it to appear on the certificates.
