Late afternoon of October 10, 2008, the residential houses surrounding Leon Garcia Sr. National High School (formerly San Juan National High School), at Gotamco Area, Barangay Leon Garcia, Agdao District of this City, were devastated by fire.
Around 138 houses adjacent to the school campus were hit by the fire, leaving about 356 families homeless. These families were temporarily housed at the gymnasium and some classrooms of Leon Garcia NHS. Apart from the destruction of houses, there were two (2) school buildings, with six (6) classrooms each, of said school also caught fire in the same incident.
The school is now facing a dilemma how to conduct its regular classes, considering that the affected students, numbering to at least 200, have missed their classes because of the loss of the classrooms. The school is presently at a loss where to hold the classes of those affected students, considering that its gym and its available classrooms are currently being used as a provisional shelter for the homeless residents.
Because of the urgent need for the immediate construction of classrooms to replace the ones ruined by the fire, Councilor Acosta, on today’s session, passed a resolution requesting the Secretary of the Department of Education, Hon. Jesli Lapus, to allocate funds for the construction of twelve (12) classrooms to replace those that were destroyed by fire in Leon Garcia, Sr. National High School, (formerly San Juan National High School).
