There are a lot of good men and women in the council who are conscientious in their work and fiercely guard their good reputation, and of this institution, in the conduct of service for public welfare.
If there are a few, who have allegedly received a sum of money in exchange of favorable consideration, it would indeed be very unfortunate. That should be properly dealt with in accordance to existing laws. But let it be said that, that is not the policy of the Davao City Council. Our votes are not for sale. Let it be said also, that the giver and receiver, if any, are both liable and accountable, legally and morally.
And after all that has been said and done, the City Council will not allow a few, whether a member of the council, or some other unscrupulous persons with malicious intent, to undermine the credibility of this institution and will make a concerted effort to preserve its dignity as representatives of the people.
Public office is a public trust. Whatever will come out in the end regarding this controversy, this representation, along with the other members of the City Council, who have never asked, neither received consideration, in cash nor in kind, in exchange for votes cast in items being tackled before, during, or after voting of items in the agenda, will do our best to make sure that PUBLIC INTEREST above all, is upheld as a matter of duty.
