Last October 17, 2007, the 20th International Day for the Eradication of Poverty commenced. This is a historic event all over the world because of the fact that this is a testament to the global crusade against poverty, inequality and on the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals.
The “End Poverty by 2015 Millennium Campaign” is a vow made by almost 200 world leaders at the 2000 U.N. Millennium Summit when they swore to attain the eight Millennium Development Goals which are designed to improve the lives of the world’s poorest people in the next eight years. The Stand Up, Speak Out Pledge is a worldwide call to inform, inspire and encourage people’s involvement and action for realization of the Millennium Development Goals.
The Philippines ranked third last year in the Asia-Pacific Region, next to India and Nepal, in mobilizing the greatest number of individuals for the Stand Up, Speak Out campaign. More than trying to win the a world record, the participation of Filipinos in the Stand Up, Speak Out Pledge is the Philippines’ validation of its commitment in supporting endeavors to put an end to extreme poverty not only within the archipelago but around the world as well. This is also an attestation of the citizens’ earnest efforts in holding their government accountable for the achievement of the eight Millennium Development Goals.
In Davao City, several multi-sectoral agencies gathered together at exactly 8am on October 17 at Rizal Park wearing something white to represent their fight and vigilance against poverty. Councilor Acosta gave a speech urging each and every Dabawenyo to come together under a single platform to show a common alliance and fortitude in putting an end to hunger and inequality. (JC)
