Pre-planning Workshop of the Davao City Local School Board

The Davao City School Board conducted a pre-planning workshop last January 17 and 18, 2008 at the City Mayor’s Conference Room. It was attended by the members of the Board itself and the Local Schools Management Committee. Mr. Juan Miguel Luz, Consultant of the City Mayor on Educational Concerns and the President and CEO of International Institute of Rural Reconstruction, was the facilitator of the workshop.

The main objective of the said activity was to draft a program of work for School Year 2008-2009 and prepare the Local School Board Budget based on Special Education Fund collections and other available resources. The workshop was started with the review of school mapping exercise by catchment area, with the helpful presentation of maps by the City Planning and Development Office (CPDO). With the use of the maps, some of the participants were tasked to highlight schools with low achievement test scores and pinpoint those with major health concerns.

Among the ten performance indicators identified by the Department of Education, four were tackled and given preferential attention, to wit: Participation – student population; Retention – completion of students from Grade I to VI and from 1st year to 4th year High School; Achievement – completion of students with quality and high academic standard; and Transition – referring to student movement into secondary education.

All the items discussed were taken well by the participants. Majority of them cannot wait for the planning workshop proper on February 7 and 8, 2008 at the Grand Menseng Hotel.
