Corazon C. Aquino, the 11th President of the Republic of the Philippines, passed away due to cardio-pulmonary arrest at 3:18 a.m. Saturday, August 1, 2009, Manila time. She was 76 years old.
The Philippine democracy icon was diagnosed with colon cancer in early 2008 and was admitted at the Makati Medical Center intensive care unit in July of this year after she had difficulty eating. Maria Corazon Cojuanco Aquino was the first woman president in Asia. Her term ended in 1992 but she remained politically active, joining protest rallies demanding the resignation of current Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo for alleged corruption.
She became Time Magazine Woman of the Year in 1986 after she won the Philippine Snap Elections in that same year. During her term, she set into motion the creation of a democratic political order and the enactment of a new Philippine Constitution and many other important legal reforms, including the Philippine Agrarian Reform Law and the Philippine Local Government Code.
Our deepest condolences and sympathies to the entire Cojuangco and Aquino families especially to President Cory's children and grandchildren; and together with them we pray for the eternal repose of her soul.
May she rest in peace.
